    For decades, National Mapping Agencies have pursued models for spatial data infrastructures (SDIs); aiming to create systems where national, state/provincial and local data can seamlessly interoperate to support analysis and mapping efforts across a wide range of civic functions. Today, the development of open map data base layers, coupled with a system of unique entity identifiers, offers a neutral, foundational map that integrates many types of public, private and commercial data extensions. This approach provides a sustainable model for SDIs, supported by public and private sectors.
